Felice Navidad de Madrid

December 22-25

Things we’ve learned while in Spain:

* It is more difficult to eat in Spain than Italy.  The Spanish keep such strange hours (as compared with Americans), eating in bars during the early afternoon hours and closing from 1600-2100.

* How can you feed a child with such erratic dining hours?  When dining during the early afternoon hours, one must dine in a smoke filled bar with your child.

* McDonald’s (the golden standard of feeding a toddler on the go) does not serve breakfast in Spain.

* Don’t plan on eating on Christmas Eve unless you find the one Chinese restaurant.  The Chinese are the true capitalists; open to serve the non-Christian community in every country on Christmas Eve.

* Study your Spanish before traveling to Spain as they make no effort to know any English.  We have been able to muddle through Europe (East and West) with our broken communications with local nationals.  In Spain, it’s Spanish or nothing.

Kati Maya took the opportunity to assert herself and grow up while on this trip.  Her new favorite word, and 75% of the vocabulary used daily, is N-O!!!  She has also learned to throw things, on to the ground, at you, and anywhere else she chooses.  Our trip to Madrid was a welcomed opportunity to visit another country and enjoy Christmas in another country, but we think we’ll wait to go back to Spain again until Kati Maya is a LOT older.
